BEAF Services and Rates

The BEAF (formerly Mercury Lab, SERCMLAB) offers resources to the teaching, research and service activities of the University, and provides versatile analytical support to a broad range of research programs in the fields of environmental sciences, chemistry, earth sciences, and environmental health both nationally and internationally. The BEAF has the capability to perform a variety of analyses, including but not limited to, total mercury and methylmercury, a range of over twenty metals, and speciation of organometallic compounds in environmental, biomedical, and geological samples. The experienced research and analytical
teams in the BEAF can assist in developing new analytical methods to meet the needs of different research programs.

  • Notes for Pricing
    1. The listing price includes all method-required calibration and QA/QC samples, which include at least 1 system blank, 1 calibration curve consisting of 5 non-zero points, 1 method blank, 1 sample duplicate, 1 matrix spike and 1 matrix spike duplicate, and/or 1 certified reference material sample.
    2. The price for metal analysis (using ICP-MS) is for any elements included within one standard set. For each additional standard set required, an additional $10 charge per sample will be added. Additional costs, which vary dependent on the types of gases used, will be added for isotopes (e.g. 40Ca, 59Co, 52Cr, 56Fe, 39K) that are required to be analyzed in DRC mode to avoid Ar interferences
    3. The fee can also be charged on a time basis upon mutual agreement. The time-based external price schedules are as follows: CVAFS (THg): $600/day; PT-GC-AFS (MeHg): $1200/day; ICP-MS (metals): $500/day; HPLC-AFS (As speciation): $800/day; LC-MS: $430/day. The hour-based price is calculated by dividing day-based price by 8 and the minimum charge period is 4 hours for any analysis.
    4. Standard turnaround time is 28 days. Faster turnaround can often be accomplished at an additional cost.
    5. The prices are meant to provide a guideline, and are subject to change without notice. Some discounts are available for long-term projects and for a large number of analyses. Run-only (by Facility technician or client) prices are negotiable with Facility Director.
    6. Laboratory staff can assist in developing new analytical methods, such as size exclusion chromatography-ICP-MS to identify metal species bound to macromolecule, HPLC-ESI (or APCI)-MS to identify metal species, and speciation analysis of other metals not listed in the table. Please contact facility director or manager to discuss potential projects and prices.
    7. Biosamples include biological samples (such as tissue of plant and fish) and biomedical samples such as biofluids (e.g. blood and urine) and cell cultures.
